So what? What the US does makes no difference. China, India, and Africa will build and use coal fired generating plants at an ever increasing rate. American sacrifices are just meaningless.
In your last sentence you wrote: "it is the number of fossil fuel power plants that matters most." That is not quite right. It is the total CO2 output of all US fossil fuel plants that matters, but not all fossil fuel plants are the same. Some are much larger, with more capacity than others, and some burn coal while others burn natural gas. Closing small gas plants first, while preserving large coal plants for later is not the same as prioritizing large coal plants for closure.
Why does CO2 matter, it only benefits the earth and has no harmful effects. It's not a greenhouse gas. It's on the list, with a factor of 1, meaning it basically has no warming potential.
Which part are you not informed about? I also have all of the fake evidence from the flat earth people. Which one of their "proofs" which you like me to disprove...same idiotic fake evidence in the climate change fraud. I've already defeated all of the phony claims. No scientist agrees. None, they all agree with me.
As hilarious as the overall economics of new nuclear stations are, they would become at least twice as hilarious if the new nuclear stations had to shut down whenever the wind blew or the sun shone. With almost 100% fixed costs, we're talking about a serious belly laugh.
Nuclear is the only viable non fossil fuel generation. Natural gas was banned from mass electric generation. Clinton changed that, at the same time he shut down our advanced nuke program.
This I know, the total current electric generation in the USA is equivalent to the total gasoline energy. In order to convert the current gasoline vehicle fleet to electric, we would have to double the current electric output and vastly increase the grid capacity.

Man made CO2 has absolutely nothing to do with Climate change or warming.
Although contrails in metropolitan areas do actually shield the sun from warming in the afternoon. Also can help retain heat in the evening
...and, Thomas, the earth is flat

How much natural gas increase is driven by the need to provide backup for intermittent renewables?
Isn't it obvious that the only way to move in the direction of net zero is a large increase in nuclear generation?
