The reality is, the IPCC ARE activists now, these types of dishonest representations are not accidents. And we see it more and more, throughout neo-liberal Establishment organizations. If they actually cared about humans, they would be focusing on honest, effective ways to reduce climate change and mitigate its effects. Instead, they push policies which will inevitably involve stripping humans of freedom and liberty; they'll empower authoritarian State bureaucrats in the name of saving marginalized communities (or whatever). That may seem conspiratorial but look around, it's everywhere, we can't pretend the IPCC simply accidentally relies on RCP8.5 after spending years on a report.

"The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is an important organization with a primary purpose to assess the scientific literature on climate in order to inform policy."

It seems that they view their primary purpose as scaring everybody into doing what they want.

Only the far left still believes the IPCC's unending pronouncements of doom...because the remedies would require their authoritarian State, as few will voluntarily pay $Thousands more annually to fix an undetectable problem. In fact the slight warming we've seen has been a godsend. Fewer raging winters while not experiencing any of the sweltering Summers of my youth.

Factually, the warming has prevented millions of deaths from the cold the last 3 decades. Also factually, the warming has been mostly in the Arctic at night in the winter... -28° instead of -31°. How is that a catastrophe?

The damage being done is not only the obvious misuse of "research" reporting conclusions that reflect its misuse; it also is the loss of trust in science that mirrors the lack of trust with science in the pandemic. If one misrepresents a part, the whole has to be questioned. Add to this your fine work describing political policy, grant money control, and activism, results in laymen like myself developing a strong distrust in opinions from those that have livelihoods directly related to a desired result wanted by a group of political activist controlling the purse strings keeping their research alive.

Very well stated. Thank you for continuing to track this issue despite undeserved blowback over the years!

The IPCC's RCP8.5 apparently still assumes rapid and continuous growth in use of coal for producing electricity, which is highly unlikely as natural gas and nuclear energy production are much more likely to increase. At least they appear to have revised their population estimates for 2100 down from 12 billion to the current 8 billion.

Not good. Not fucking good.

A valuable close read and critique Roger. I'm going to be add a link to this from my story here: https://revkin.bulletin.com/un-climate-panel-says-nations-must-boost-resilience-even-as-they-cut-heating-gases The spin and rcp8.5 focus are bad but that blatant error you point out is really troubling too.
