And Roger with the win. When I first saw paleo river records from hydrologist presentations to the Global Water and Energy Experiment (GEWEX) it really opened my eyes. Water is humbling.

The Red River example is indeed instructive as is the overarching concept showing the need for much longer time scales when gauging likelihood of extreme events. The Red River dynamic over centuries is remarkably similar to that in the valleys around Asheville, NC, with 1791 and 1916 preceding Helene.
