Almost 30 years ago I started a post-doc at the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research working under Mickey Glantz on a project focused on extreme weather, specifically hurricanes and floods. One result of that work was my first book, co-authored with my father, Hurricanes: their Nature and Impacts on Society (Wiley, 1997), pictured above.
Not only was the book personally rewarding — writing a book with my dad was great — but I learned an enormous amount working with my father to translate scientific jargon into more understandable prose. I learned a lot about hurricanes as well.
The book is 25 years old and a lot of experience and science has occurred in that time. However, the book’s foundational discussion of the meteorology, climatology, and societal impacts and responses to hurricanes remains solid.
Below, paid subscribers can download a full PDF of the book. That’s the third book of mine now available to THB Pro subscribers — The Climate Fix and Disasters & Climate Change are the others. You can find the books and a whole bunch of other good stuff at the THB Pro tab at the top.
