"It is time for adults in the room (Hello Congress?) to assert themselves."

Is that supposed to be a joke?

I got my Ph.D. in geology in 1980 and while finishing it got a job as a tenure-track professor at Kent State University in Ohio. I lasted two quarters. I was making less than the janitors and I got chewed out by the chairman for making too many long distance phone calls. I don't blame him; the department was really that broke. But I realized I was never going to be able to set up a research program in Kent Ohio if I could not make long-distance phone calls. I also learned that teaching "Rocks for Jocks" was not my thing. After the second quarter. I took a research job with a major oil company and never looked back. I had more than enough money to do my research and even got to publish enough to win five best paper awards. I have had a long, very successful career in the oil biz.

Where exactly was my downside? Why would a new STEM Ph.D. WANT to be a professor?
