A heckuva widespread, long-lived ‘anomaly’ that you have been railing on about for years. The car crashes were multiple, and occurred all along the way - driven by zealots who neither cared about the science or had the skills to do this properly.

Government action, including science conducted by government, needs to be transparent and honest. As Roger pointed out, the BDD wasn't transparent at all and wasn't willing to change -- and therefore useless and harmful. The announcement says "All past reports, spanning 1980-2024, and their underlying data remain authoritative ...". Authoritative? They just don't quite want to admit misleading the public for decades, do they.

It's truly rare for a relative outsider to cause a dramatic change in a long established bureaucratic procedure, especially one of such high profile and with such great emotional investment by the authors, defenders, and users of the reports.
A person of a suspicious nature might think that the maintainer of the BDD had political clout (one or more congressional supporters) which kept him in his position despite agency disgust and allowed him to continually report corrupt, but useful to some, data.
One might also suspect that the change in administration finally made his position untenable, and he fled before being fired or prosecuted and that the NOAA management may have been quite happy to finally have the ability to get rid of this parasite.
I'll note that Ed Markey is about as corrupt as they come.
And so I see this morning that we continue to see sea level rise, in some cases surprisingly. (CNN) ... it seems to me that there is some cherry-picking going on here to downplay what is happening on a broader scale. (I am not disputing the finding about sea ice.) ... However, your continual reference to the US Congress, given its current constitution, seems a bit disingenuous. It would be much more helpful for you to raise your voice and expertise to argue for what is needed with those administrators and politicians who are favoring the dismantling of climate related information sources. I think we can agree that we do need reliable data and that will require organizations to perform that task and the US gov. is a critical player.

As a Reagan conservative, I believe weather warnings and forecasts of extreme weather are responsibilities of government. That means government has to collect the data necessary to execute those mission successfully.
The issue is that the NWS and NOAA have/had severe issues now and while Biden was in office that have nothing to do with President Trump. To take just a single example, tornado warning accuracy has plummeted since 2010 and tornado forecasts have been flat for a decade.

Unfortunately the US Government has come into some criticism during the Biden administration for economic data. Goal oriented initial reports, continuously revised against goal in subsequent months. There may be real rot wherever you seek a home for BDD.
It is not realistic to depoliticize these agencies. Politics is inevitable and becomes more dominants over time. Why do we need any of these agencies? Will no company do the work? No non-profit? If no one wants to pay for it, why is it funded?
Its proper job is to monitor the climate and give unbiased scientific reports such that governments and companies can make decisions, right down to farmers trying t decide what to plant, is it going to be a dry or wet year.

I suspect that the retirement of the expert was due to Trump coming into office. This action sounds exactly like something DOGE would have identified and cut. I just read that in fact Federal spending was down 5% in the first quarter. If that continues, we will save $300 billion per year, clearly not enough but a good start. This is the first time in government history that such large cuts have been made and so many employees let go. This is Trump's strength. When he is convinced something is needed he doesn't care what the opposition says about it, a classic characteristic of Teddy Roosevelt.
The cuts so far are extremely small and yet the whining and crying is so loud! We can't even get back to the level of government spending in 2019. We need a Milei.
